Life Skills (PSHE)

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is a school subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future.

PSHE at St Paul’s Primary School is taught as a discrete school subject but it also underpins and links to the school values and ethos. Through this carefully planned teaching, children develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepare for life and work in modern Britain.

The national curriculum also states that ‘all schools should make provision for personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE), drawing on good practice'. As a school, our long term objectives aim to support pupils spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development whilst preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life.

Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) is also a compulsory element of PSHE from September 2020. This involves learning about emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up, relationships, sex, human sexuality and sexual health in an age appropriate and sensitive way. It complements the biological aspects of sex education covered in compulsory science lessons. As well as providing accurate information on human biology and sexual reproduction, it gives pupils essential skills for building positive, respectful, non-exploitative relationships and staying safe both on and offline.
